What does my student do if there is an NTI Day?

Hello Thomas Nelson High School Families, Your student has been working on their Excavating Gifts Course at home and in Care & Connect for the past several months. Today in Care & Connect your student's LEADER reviewed THIS SLIDE DECK to explore the protocol of their responsibilities as a student during an NTI Day. If you would like to see the slides and video your student watched, you can click the words "THIS SLIDE DECK" highlighted and underlined in blue above. Today your student: 1)Watched a screencast explaining how weather decisions are made in our district. 2)Viewed the rubric in which they will be assessed on an NTI Day. 3)Picked to have either contact with their C&C LEADER on a Google Meet or a one on one phone call on an NTI Day. Should an NTI Day occur, we have asked each student to make progress on their Excavating Gifts Course Project as well as have direct contact with their C&C LEADER for support. This Google Meet (individualized to the Care & Connect at occurring at 1 pm) would require the student to have access to the internet to complete. The intention behind the Google Meet is to provide space for students to gain feedback and support from their Care & Connect. Should your student not have reliable access to the internet in bad weather, they had the option today to sign up for a phone call directly with their Care & Connect LEADER (occurring from 2-3 pm). The intent behind the phone call is to provide another avenue of direct access for feedback and support while your student works on their project. As a reminder, your student's Excavating Gifts Course is due on March 30 and will culminate in a presentation to your student's Care & Connect the last week of March. We value and appreciate the support you provide our General each and every day. Feel free to reach out to your student's Care & Connect LEADER with any further questions about the Excavating Gifts Course or NTI Days. YES.

General Family Members,

Take a look around our school and local communities, and take notice of the diversity of our citizens - note the different backgrounds, characteristics, and strengths that they possess. Within our society, we may face a multitude of everchanging problems, but “we are a community of possibilities” (Peter Block). We are a community of possibilities because we are all GIFTED. Inside each of us are certain strengths, talents, and passions, and it is our obligation to not only identify these GIFTS but to EXCAVATE them and to share them with the world. In fact, a GIFT doesn’t really become a GIFT until you share it with the world. Together, we can create the future for our community, but only if each of us shares the GIFTS that we possess.

Furthermore, when your General is able to EXCAVATE and share their GIFTS with our school, we are then able to personalize their school participation to truly make it an Xperience for them. We can create alignment opportunities through student organizations and community partners because we will better understand who they are and what they are passionate about creating. Your General’s  Care & Connect will strengthen because not only will classmates better understand how to CARE for them, but your General will also better understand how they can better support C&C. 

We value these beliefs so deeply that we have created intentional time and space for your General to EXCAVATE their GIFTS. Through this course, your General will LEAD a five-phase protocol that will enable them to: explore passions and curiosities, identify an essential question, develop an end-product, create a plan of action, and share their GIFT with the world. Your General’s C&C LEADER and classmates will work to support along the way. The world is waiting…EXCAVATE GIFTS.

Your student will be completing an Excavating Gifts Course this year. The goal of this course is to allow space and collaboration around what gift your student brings to our COMMUNITY. Your student recently attended a student-led Ignite to provide information on what the course is, how it was developed, and what their next steps will be. Then, your student was led through an introductory lesson in C&C outlining the process they will experience this year while excavating their gifts. While your student will have time and space to work on this process during C&C, there might be times your student will need to work on progressing their ideas at home. Should we have an NTI day this year, your student will work on their Excavating Gifts Course.

The first due date for this work will be November 19. The item due is your student's brainstorming template for how they might develop their gift into a project. To view the due dates for the year, see the image below.

We would like to celebrate the Community Course class for developing this course for our school. These students have led the way in student voice and choice for developing instructional opportunities for our school.

On Friday during Care & Connect, your Generals experienced a lesson containing the video above about NTI Days this year. A few key highlights are:

1. All Generals will be completing the course titled, How must we support our growing community? 
2. Pending SBDM approval, this course will be completed for .25 of a credit each year on your General's transcript.
3. The course is open now through March 15.
4. Your General can work on this course at any time.
5. This course meets the NTI (non traditional instruction) requirement,yet is about more than the requirement itself. The course is an opportunity for our students to engage in authentic questions our community faces. Therefore, your General will be completing this course regardless of how many or how few NTI days we have this year.
6. Your General joined a Google Classroom on Friday. You can ask your General to invite you to be a member of the course as well, if you would like to access or view their work.
7. The top community development plan from each HOUSE will be submitted to Mrs.Kim Huston from the Nelson County Economic Development Agency. The top plan selected by Mrs.Huston will be recognized at the April Fiscal Court meeting.

Here's to continuing to think anew about creating meaningful and authentic learning opportunities for our Generals.

Thomas Nelson High School is excited to present an extension of whole child CARE to our families. Nurse practitioner services are now available for our students and teachers through the Healthy Kids Clinic. For more information, please watch the video above.

Our HOUSE Stewards will be hosting a new twist on an annual tradition. Grades will be posted on October 19 for invitations to the Dean's List Celebration. Parents of students with a 3.25 GPA or higher as of October 19 will be invited to attend. The celebration will take place by HOUSEs. Invites to come soon!

Hamilton will celebrate on November 7 from 8:40-9:30
Lincoln will celebrate on November 7 from 9:30- 10:30
Washington will celebrate on November 8 from 8:40-9:30
Lafayette will celebrate on November 8 from 9:30-10:30

What must we CREATE?

The acceleration of technology demands we continue to CREATE experiences for our Generals that are both COMMUNITY and future centered. Over the past two weeks, our Generals and LEADERs have emersed themselves into exploring how we can say YES to what our future demands of us. Every sophomore attended a session with Workforce Development LEADER, David Mudd, as they explored the path they wanted to paint for their future. Additionally, our LEADERs are visiting local industries this week to explore ways to CONNECT our Generals to authentic experiences inside the classroom.

Ridiculously Good Looking.

Ask your General about their experiences engaging in MODL reading and writing. This week, we will begin MODL reading with excerpts from the book Strengths Finders. Your General will be utilizing this MODL reading to engage in our Citizenship Collaboration next week.

CONNECT.

The TNHS XC/TF team organizes the annual Iron Horse Festival 5K. For the first time ever, this race will be able to offer live results and chipped times. Sign up for the Iron Horse 5K by visiting THIS LINK.

After you run in the Iron Horse 5K, be sure to stick around for the parade. Our Student Organization says it is sure to be a wild ride!

We are a COMMUNITY of  Possibilities.

This Friday marks our quarterly Student Gift Showcase. During this time, our Generals will be showcasing their gifts through student-led 30-minute sessions. Some of these sessions include: How to Speak German, How to Write Cursive, Applying for GSP, and How to Play Mandolin.

                

Chromebook CARETaking. YES!

We are excited to be launching our 1:1 Chromebook initiative. Any family who did not attend HOUSEWarming may complete the Chromebook CARE Camp by watching THIS VIDEO and completing THIS FORM. These resources are also available on the school website under "TNHS Basics".

The Chromebook CARE Camp Form also serves as our acceptable use permission form. This means your student will not be permitted to have access to use of the internet without parent completion of the form.

Any student who is new to the district and does not yet have a Google account will need to inform their Care & Connect LEADER. Once the C&C LEADER records their name on our internal sheet, your student's account will be created within 2 days.
